Symbicort can be used to treat severe asthma, chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD), and other conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

The medication's active ingredients relax the muscles of your lungs, keeping them open and allowing air to flow more easily. To help you breathe easier, the medication contains corticosteroids. These reduce inflammation and swelling.

Symbicort contains active ingredients budesonide, formoterol fumarate, dihydrate. They are available in three strengths, 100/6 micrograms, 200/6 micrograms and 400/12 micrograms respectively, per delivered dose.

The recommended dose will vary depending on whether you are using it to treat COPD, asthma, or if you use it as a single inhaler or alongside a "rescue". If you have an asthma attack, try taking one inhalation. Wait a while to see if it helps. If it doesn't, you can take another one. However, you shouldn't take more than six inhalations at once. You should consult your doctor if you need to take 8 or more inhalations per day. However, you should not exceed 12 inhalations within 24 hours.

The dose indicator will show you how often you use your inhaler. If the indicator turns red, it is time to visit your doctor for a new one.

You should not forget to take your Symbicort. However, skip the missed dose and go straight on to the next one. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed dose.

You should not take Symbicort more than recommended. Overdose can cause your heart to beat faster, make you dizzy, weaker, or give you headaches.

if you are allergic to budesonide, formoterol, or the other ingredients of this medicine ;
if you have diabetes, heart problems, kidney disorder or liver disorder;

if you have low levels of potassium in your blood;
if you are pregnant, trying to be pregnant or breastfeeding; or
if you are taking any prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicine.

Symbicort may cause the following side effects:

Palpitations
trembling or shaking
Thrush in the mouth
Sore throat
Cough
Hoarse voice
Headache
Pneumonia
