Levonorgestrel is a synthetic hormone. If taken within 72 hours after having unprotected sexual relations, it prevents approximately 84% of pregnancies. Levonelle 1500 stops your ovaries from releasing eggs and prevents sperm from fertilising any eggs you have already released.
Levonelle 1500 is a powerful drug that can prevent unwanted pregnancies. It can be used after unprotected sex.
It is best to take the tablet as soon after having sex as possible. Levonelle 1500 is safe to take at any stage of your menstrual cycle, provided you don't think or are pregnant.
Levonelle 1500 should be used only in emergencies and not as a regular contraceptive method. It is less reliable and more likely to cause problems with your period if you take it more than once during a menstrual cycle. You should talk to your doctor if you have to take the medication more than once.
You can continue using the contraceptive pill or other regular methods of contraception after you take Levonelle 1500.
Unprotected sex after taking Levonelle 1500 will not prevent you from getting pregnant. You should consider other contraceptives.
Take another tablet if you feel sick within three hours of taking the tablet or you vomit. Levonelle 1500 can cause your next period to be delayed. However, if it is more than seven days late or you notice any changes from normal, you should have a pregnancy test. To ensure that the drug has worked, it is recommended that you see your doctor three weeks after starting to take it.
Your period is delayed or you are experiencing symptoms of pregnancy (heavy breasts and morning sickness);
You have Crohn's disease or a small-bowel disease that prevents you from absorbing the drug;
You have severe liver disease;
You have a history of ectopic pregnancy (a situation in which the baby is born outside of the womb); or
You have a history of salpingitis (inflammation in the Fallopian tubes).
Some evidence suggests that the drug may not be as effective for women with higher body mass indexes (BMI). However, despite the absence of data, it is still safe to be taken by all women regardless of their weight.
This medicine should not be taken with any other emergency contraceptive pills. It will reduce its effectiveness.
Levonelle 1500, like many other medications with active ingredients, can cause or be affected by others. If you have taken or you are taking any prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicine or medicine with the active ingredient, consult your doctor for the adverse effects of combining these medicines.
Do not consume this tablet if you are pregnant, trying to be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Like any other medicine, Levonelle 1500 may cause the following side effects:
Lower abdominal pain
If any of these or other side effects persist or worsen, then consult your doctor immediately.
