Levothyroxine Tablets

Before you begin taking levothyroxine, and every time you refill your prescription, make sure you read the Patient Information Leaflet.

Take Levothyroxine as directed by your doctor.

Take this medication orally once a day on an empty stomach, usually 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. Take the capsules of this medication whole; do not chew, split or crush the tablet.

However, for infants or children who cannot swallow whole tablets, crush the tablet and mix in 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 to 10 millilitres) of water, and give using a spoon or dropper right away. Do not prepare a supply in advance or mix the tablet in soy infant formula.

Your doctor will determine the dosage based on your age, weight, medical condition, laboratory test results, and response to treatment.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it approximately at the same time every day.

Do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor gives you instructions to discontinue. Thyroid replacement treatment is usually taken for life.

Consult your doctor and disclose before taking Levothyroxine if you have or ever had:

An allergic reaction to Levothyroxine or any of the ingredients of Levothyroxine;
Increased thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis);
Decreased adrenal gland function;
A heart disease (such as coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat); High blood pressure; or
Diabetes

Hair Loss
Increased sweating
Sensitivity to heat
Mood changes (such as nervousness, mood swings)
Tiredness
Diarrhoea
Shaking (tremor)
Headache
Shortness of breath
Bone pain or easily broken bones
Chest pain or fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat
Swelling in hands/ankles/feet
Seizures
Weight gain or loss
Vomiting
Changes in appetite
Fever
Changes in the menstrual cycle
Leg cramps
