Atorvastatin prevents the buildup of cholesterol in your arteries. Blocking blood flow to the heart and brain can lead to clogged arteries. You may use this medication as part of a combination treatment. It means that Atorvastatin can be taken with other medications such as bile acid resins or other cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Atorvastatin lowers your low-density cholesterol or LDL. It also raises your good cholesterol, the high-density lipoprotein or HDL. Atorvastatin improves your body’s capacity to get rid of your LDL cholesterol through your liver.
Your doctor will start with a low dosage of Atorvastatin and slowly increase your dosage, not more than once every 2 to 4 weeks.
Continue to take Atorvastatin even if your condition improves. Do not stop taking Atorvastatin unless your doctor directs you to.
The normal starting dosage for adults is 10 – 20 mg daily, and the maximum dosage is 80 mg per day. Paediatric patients should receive 10 mg once a day up to a maximum dosage of 20 mg daily.
