Prostaglandins, hormones found in the linings of the uterus, can cause heavy periods and period pain. Mefenamic Acid reduces hormone levels and relieves excessive bleeding. As a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), mefenamic acid also reduces inflammation and fever.
Take a tablet in whole with a sip of water. You should take this medicine with or right after meals. Your doctor will determine the dose based on your condition.
The tablets or capsules come in various doses, the normal dose for adults is 500mg, taken 3 times a day (1500mg in total); however, doctors often prescribe a lower amount for adults aged 70 years or over.
Your doctor or Pharmacy4U pharmacist might recommend a lower dose if you are over 65. At the beginning of your treatment, you may need to be closely monitored for stomach bleeding.
You should notify your doctor immediately if you have taken more Mefenamic Acid than you should. Side effects may occur. You can always take your next dose if you forget. To make up for the lost dose, you should not double your dose.
Side effects can occur with Mefenamic Acid like any other medication. But not all people get them, a few people may notice some side effects. You should immediately seek medical attention if you have any of these rare but serious side effects:
Allergy symptoms include wheezing, difficulty in breathing, feeling faint, swelling on the face or tongue, swelling at the hands or feet, and itchy skin
Severe illness with blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals
Blood in your stools, loose stools or black tarry stools
Vomiting blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds
If you have stomach pain, heartburn, or indigestion, stop taking these tablets and consult your doctor immediately if the problem persists or gets worsen.
