Microgynon has two types of female sexual hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. These hormones prevent you from getting pregnant by making it harder for sperm and fluid in your cervix to reach the womb.
Microgynon can be taken for 21 days. One pill must be taken for 21 days. Then, you can take 7 days without taking any pills.
Microgynon, a combination oral contraceptive, works by overriding your normal menstrual cycles. The normal characteristics of a woman's menstrual cycle are changes in her sex hormone levels. These hormones trigger the release of eggs from the ovaries and prepare the womb for a possible pregnancy. If an egg is not fertilised, the hormone levels will drop, leading to the monthly period of shedding.
The daily hormone pill makes your body believe that ovulation has already occurred, which prevents eggs from ripening.
Hormones can also thicken the mucus around the neck of a womb, making it harder for sperm from the vagina to enter the womb to fertilise an egg. They can also alter the quality of the womb's lining, which makes it less favourable for fertilised eggs to be placed there.
Make sure you take your pill every day at the same time.
Start the course by selecting the one marked with the current day of the week.
You will find arrows on each strip directing you to the next contraceptive tablet. Keep going until the end of the course by taking one every day.
You should swallow each pill whole and not chew it with a glass of water.
After the course is over, you will have seven days without taking any pills. When you begin taking the pill after pill free 7 days, e.g., if you take the last Microgynon tablet on Friday, then take the next Microgynon pills will be taken the Saturday of next week.
Microgynon 30 can sometimes come in strips that have 7 inactive pills. You won't need to stop taking your daily pills, but you will have a seven-day break from hormones. It will have the same effect.
