Saxenda's active ingredient is Liraglutide. This medication is very similar to the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). GLP-1, which is created in the digestive system after eating a meal, is a hormone that tells your body you are full and regulates your appetite. Liraglutide has a similar effect as GLP-1 and can help you reduce your appetite, making you feel fuller. It may result in you eating fewer calories and possibly losing weight. This treatment is effective when combined with regular exercise and a low-calorie diet.
Saxenda is initially administered at a low dose. The dose will gradually increase over the next five weeks until you reach the maximum dose. If you have not lost at least 5% of your initial body weight, treatment should be stopped after 12 weeks. The following is a typical dosing schedule:
Week 1 0.6>mg once a day
Week 2 1.2mg once a day
Week 3 1.8mg once a day
Week 4 2.4mg once a day
Week 5 3mg once a day
