Ezetimibe is used in combination with lifestyle changes such as weight loss, exercise, and diet to lower cholesterol (a fat-like substance). Ezetimibe is compatible to be used in combination with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) or alone. Ezetimibe belongs to a group of medications known as cholesterol-lowering medication. It prevents cholesterol absorption in the intestine.
Atherosclerosis is a buildup of cholesterol and fats on the walls of blood vessels. It decreases blood flow which in turn decreases the oxygen supply to the brain and heart. It can be reduced by lowering blood cholesterol and fat levels. It may also decrease the risk of developing heart conditions like angina (chest pain), strokes and heart attacks.
You can lower your cholesterol levels by making some lifestyle changes. Eat a low-fat diet and exercise every day. If you're overweight, lose weight.
Dosage: 10mg, taken one time per day. If you take another cholesterol-lowering medication, you need to be extra careful about timings. Some medications have specific guidelines regarding how often you should take them together. Consult your doctor if you are unsure.
You can skip your Ezetimibe tablet if you forget to take it. Instead, you can move on to the next one. You don't have to worry, but you shouldn't increase your dose to make up the missed one.
You should not take more Ezetimibe than you should. Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Follow a cholesterol-lowering diet before you start this medication and continue the diet once you have started treatment with Ezetimibe. You can swallow the tablets whole or with water.
