What are Ibuprofen 200mg Coated Tablets?

Ibuprofen is a painkiller that can relieve everyday mild to moderate aches and pains, inflammation and fever. It targets the source of pain to provide quick relief.

What pain can Ibuprofen treat?

Ibuprofen can be used to provide quick relief from many types of day to day aches and pains including:

• Period pain
• Nerve related pain
• Dental pain
• Headaches
• Migraine
• Backache
• Swelling
• Stiff joints and muscles
• Fever
• Cold and flu symptoms

How does Ibuprofen work?

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines known as NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). It reduces inflammation and relieves pain by changing the body’s response to pain by reducing the hormones that are responsible for pain and swelling in the body. Ibuprofen takes around 20-30 minutes to work if taken orally.

How to take this product

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Take 1 – 2 tablets with a drink of water, preferably with or without food, up to 3 times a day as required. The dose should not be repeated more frequently than every 4 hours. Do NOT take more than 6 tablets in a day.

Warnings

This product is intended for adults, the elderly and children over the age of twelve and is for short term use only. You should take the lowest dose for the shortest time necessary to relieve your symptoms. Do not take Ibuprofen for longer than 10 days unless your doctor tells you to. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice from your doctor.

Can you take Ibuprofen with other medication?

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Ibuprofen may affect or be affected by some other medicines such as:

• Other pain killers including aspirin or other NSAIDs
• Medicine used to treat bacterial infections
• Medicines that are anti-coagulants
• Medicine used to treat depression
• Medicines used to treat diabetes
• Medicine used to treat epilepsy
• Medicines that reduce high blood pressure
• Medicine used to treat viral infections, such as zidovudine and ritonavir
• Medicine used to treat heart failure
• Medicines used to treat various illnesses that involve inflammation in the body
• Medicines used to treat cancer
• Medicines used during abortion
• Diuretics

When should Nurofen NOT be used?

Do NOT take Ibuprofen tablets if you are allergic or have had an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen, any NSAID, aspirin or any of the other ingredients in this medicine (see ingredients tab) or if you:

• Ever had a worsening of symptoms of asthma (breathing difficulty) when taking ibuprofen, aspirin or similar painkillers
• Have or had a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
• Ever had a perforation or bleeding of the gut when takin any NSAID
• Suffer from severe liver, kidney or heart problems
• Are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
• Have abnormal bleeding or problems with abnormal bruising
• Are currently taking mifamurtide
• Are a child with chickenpox

Take special care with Ibuprofen tablets if you:

• Develop a skin rash or allergic reaction after taking this medicine- seek medical attention immediately if you experience this
• Are elderly, as you may be more likely to experience side effects
• Have a history of asthma or other allergy disorders
• Have liver, kidney or bowel problems
• Have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
• Have or have had high blood pressure or heart problems 
• Have a history of bleeding in the stomach
• Smoke
• Have an infection, as symptoms such as fever, pain and swelling may be masked
• Are in the first 6 months of your pregnancy 
• Are taking other NSAID painkillers including a specific type called COX-2 inhibitors or aspirin, with a daily dose above 75mg
• Are on low-dose aspirin (up to 75mg)

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Ibuprofen tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them.

If any side effects become serious or if you notice any side effects that are not listed in this leaflet, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. You can minimise the risk of side effects by taking the least amount of tablets for the shortest amount of time necessary.

Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you experience:

• Signs of aseptic meningitis, such as severe headache, high temperature, stiffness of the neck or intolerance to bright light
• Signs of intestinal bleeding, such as passing blood in your faeces, black tarry stools, vomiting any blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds

Tell your doctor and stop taking Ibuprofen tablets if you experience

• Unexplained stomach pain (abdominal pain) or other abnormal stomach symptoms, indigestion, heartburn, feeling sick and/or vomiting
• Unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, skin rash, itching or bruising
• Yellowing of the eyes and/or skin
• Severe sore throat with high fever (these may be symptoms of a condition known as agranulocytosis)
• Blurred or disturbed vision (visual impairment) or seeing/hearing strange things (hallucinations)
• Fluid retention e.g. swollen ankles (this may be a sign of kidney problems)
• Severe spreading skin rash
