Omeprazole is a medication which reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach; it achieves this by directly inhibiting the cells in your stomach which are responsible for producing stomach acid.
It is used to treat a number of conditions related to the excess production of stomach acid including indigestion, acid reflux and heartburn.

The most common symptoms of acid reflux/heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest (behind the breast bone) and an unpleasant, sour taste in the mouth. This is caused by excess stomach acid travelling up the food pipe (oesophagus) to the throat. Where heartburn/acid reflux becomes a chronic (long term) ailment it is known as ‘Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease’ (GERD or GORD).

Indigestion is the name given to a collection of symptoms including pain, discomfort, acid reflux and bloating in the stomach associated with difficulty digesting food.

There are some more serious conditions where acid reflux can be a symptom and it is important you seek medical attention via your GP if you experience any of the following:
  • Persistent acid reflux which doesn’t respond to omeprazole
  • Unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, frequent vomiting
  • Bringing up blood in your vomit or passing blood in your stool (stool will be a rusty colour)
  • You are otherwise concerned about your symptoms.

Take One capsule with half a glass of water, on an empty stomach 30 minutes before any food or other medication.

The usual dose of omeprazole is 10-20mg once daily.

As with any medication Omeprazole can cause side effects in some people – although not everyone will experience these.

Before taking Omeprazole it is important to familiarise yourself with the patient information leaflet included with your order. If you have any queries or would like to discuss any aspects of the leaflet please do not hesitate to get in touch with Quick Meds where one of our pharmacists will be happy to help.

If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Omeprazole and contact a doctor immediately:
  • Sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting or difficulties in swallowing (severe allergic reaction)
  • Reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling. There may also be severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals. This could be ‘Stevens-Johnson syndrome’ or ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’
  • Yellow skin, dark urine and tiredness which can be symptoms of liver problems
Other side effects include:
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
  • headache
  • effects on your stomach or gut: diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, wind (flatulence)
  • feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • benign polyps in the stomach
Omeprazole may in very rare cases affect the white blood cells leading to immune deficiency. If you have an infection with symptoms such as fever with a severely reduced general condition or fever with symptoms of a local infection such as pain in the neck, throat or mouth or difficulties in urinating, you must consult your doctor as soon as possible so that a lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis) can be ruled out by a blood test. It is important for you to give information about your medicine at this time.

For a complete list of side effects please consult the information leaflet included with your order.

Do not take Omeprazole:
  • if you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (See the patient information leaflet enclosed with your order)
  •  if you are allergic to medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors (e.g. pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole)
  • if you are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used for HIV infection).
Do not take Omeprazole if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Omeprazole.
Omeprazole may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Omeprazole or while you are taking it, talk to your doctor straight away:
  • you lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
  • you get stomach pain or indigestion
  • you begin to vomit food or blood
  • you pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
  • you experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, as omeprazole has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea
  • you have severe liver problems
  • if you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Omeprazole that reduces stomach acid
  • you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).

For an accurate list of ingredients please consult the patient information leaflet included with your order.
