Glucophage SR is used in combination with exercise and diet to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in overweight people. It happens when exercise and diet alone have not been sufficient to control blood sugar levels for at least 3 to 6 months. If a person has high blood pressure, is older than 40 years old, or has a history of type 2 diabetes, such person may be at an increased risk.
Glucophage SR is especially effective for those below 45 years old, who are overweight, have high blood sugar levels after eating, or who have developed diabetes during pregnancy.
Glucophage SR is available in extended-release tablets with 500, 850, and 1000 mg.
Because of the individual's weight and other medical conditions, your doctor might recommend a different dose.
Follow the instructions of your doctor when taking this medication. You should not miss a dose. Instead, you should take the medication as soon as you can unless it's almost time for your next dosage. To make up the dose you missed, do not double your dose.
Glucophage SR's maximum daily intake should not exceed 2,550 mg daily.
