GP will no longer be issuing prescriptions to numerous medical conditions, meaning they will no longer be dealt with by prescriptions, the NHS has confirmed. To save money it spends on treating minor ailments, the NHS has published a list of 35 conditions for which doctors no longer issue a prescription.
For minor ailments, sufferers are being requested to visit their local Pharmacy or Online Pharmacy to locate appropriate over the counter remedies instead. Despite the new guidance, many people are unaware and still book an appointment to see their GP just to get these standard items.
Following a public consultation that ran from December 2017 to March 2018, NHS England compiled a list of conditions or illnesses that will no longer be dealt with by prescription. It said it has to make difficult choices about where best to spend taxpayer's money.
