It treats severe allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis, to insect bites, stings, drugs and other allergens. Epinephrine can also be used to treat exercise-induced allergic reactions.
EpiPen can be used to treat severe allergic reactions to foods, drugs, or insect bites. Epinephrine quickly improves breathing, elevates blood pressure, stimulates the heart, reduces swelling and reverses hives. However, the effects of EpiPen may not last for more than 10 to 20 minutes. After EpiPen is administered, you will require further treatment and monitoring.
EpiPen quickly reverses allergic reactions and is a lifesaver. It is the first-line defence against severe allergic reactions.
You should remove any insect bites with your fingers. However, don't squeeze, pinch, or press the skin deeper. You can apply an ice pack to the area where the sting occurred if you are able. You should immediately throw out any food that may cause allergic reactions.
Each EpiPen Auto-Injector will deliver a 0.3mg dose of adrenaline. You may need another injection within five to fifteen minutes of the first one. Sometimes, a single dose is not enough to reverse anaphylaxis. You should always have two EpiPens on you.
Never hold the EpiPen at the ends. You should never place your thumb, finger, or hand above the orange tip. Also, do not remove the blue safety cover until you are ready to use the EpiPen. If you have severe allergies, follow the instructions below to know how to properly use an EpiPen:
The EpiPen should be held in your dominant hand, your thumb should be closest to the blue cap, with the orange tip facing down, and form a fist around your EpiPen;
Take the blue safety cap off with the other hand;
Hold EpiPen at approximately 10cm from the outer thigh so that the orange tip points towards your outer thigh, and don't take off your clothing to insert the pen into the thigh;
Place the EpiPen in your outer thigh at an angle, and wait for the click;
For 3 seconds, hold the needle against your thigh;
The EpiPen should be taken out and safely thrown away, and cover the needle with the orange needle cover; and
When you need an ambulance or state anaphylaxis, dial 999. Inform the paramedics about using the EpiPen when they arrive.
An accidental or overdose of adrenaline can cause blood pressure to rise, and prompt medical attention will be required.
An EpiPen must not be re-used, even if it appears that there is medicine in the injector. You must buy a new EpiPen if you have to give another injection.
EpiPen 0.3 mg should be used by patients with a body weight greater than 30 kg.
