Komboglyze, an oral anti-diabetic medication, is used to treat type 2 diabetes.

To lower the risk of an upset stomach, take Komboglyze with food. Take it whole, without chewing or splitting it, with a sip of water. It can be taken at any time, but it is best to keep your preferred time for taking it in mind.

Komboglyze contains the active ingredient saxagliptin or metformin in two strengths per tablet: 2.5 mg/850m and 2.5 mg/1,000m.

One tablet twice daily is the usual dose. However, your doctor will determine which dosage is most effective based on your circumstances or medical conditions.

If you forget to take a dosage, you should take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dosage. In this case, you should skip the forgotten dose and move straight onto the next one, as you should never take a double dose.

You should not take more Komboglyze than you need. It can cause lactic acidosis, which can result in a permanent condition called "coma".

Consult your doctor before taking Komboglyze if you are:

allergic to saxagliptin, metformin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine;
having or had a serious allergic reaction to any other similar medications that you take to control your blood sugar;
having or had a diabetic coma;
having uncontrolled diabetes, with, for example, severe hyperglycaemia;
having kidney dysfunction or liver disorders;
a patient of heart problems or had a heart attack;
having severe problems with your blood circulation;
having breathing difficulty;
dehydrated or having a severe infection;
pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or breastfeeding;
consuming large amounts of alcohol (either every day or only from time to time);
are type 1 diabetic (your body does not produce any insulin);
having pancreas disorders;
taking insulin or an antidiabetic medicine known as ‘sulphonylurea’;
having allergic reactions to any other medicines that you take to control the amount of sugar in your blood;
having a problem or take a medicine that reduces the body’s defence against infections;
undergoing the risk factors for developing heart failure;


Komboglyze, like many medications, can affect or be affected by other medicines, especially the following:

cimetidine;
ketoconazole;
bronchodilators;
diltiazem;
rifampicin;
carbamazepine;
phenobarbital; or
phenytoin.

Regardless of the treatment, you should monitor your feet frequently and follow the foot care advice given by your doctor. Follow a diet and exercise plan to keep your diabetes well-managed and avoid overconsumption of alcohol.

The side effects of Komboglyze may include:

severe headache
muscle pain
Abdomen problems like being sick, indigestion or flatulence
urinary tract infection
infection of the upper airways
inflamed nose or throat
infection of your sinuses
dizziness
tiredness or fatigue
