Crestor stops the body from producing cholesterol by blocking the enzymes responsible. High cholesterol levels are associated with a greater risk of developing heart disease such as heart attacks. The risk of developing heart disease is significantly reduced when cholesterol levels are controlled through a combination of diet and exercise. Crestor's maximum effect on blood cholesterol can take 2 to 4 weeks.
Crestor can be taken by mouth, with or without food, once daily.
Your medical condition, response to treatment, age and any other medications you are taking will affect the determination of the dosage. Your doctor may prescribe Crestor at a lower dose if you are of Asian descent. It is because you might be more sensitive to its effects.
Antacids that contain aluminium or magnesium may reduce the absorption of this medication. If you are taking this type of antacid, take it at least 2 hours after you take Crestor.
Crestor should be taken on a regular basis to maximise its effectiveness. It will be easier to remember to take Crestor at the same time every day. Even if you feel better, you should keep taking your medication.
Follow your doctor's instructions regarding your exercise and diet. This medication may not be effective for you immediately.
Crestor may cause or worsen diabetes;
Crestor may cause foamy urine, serious but rare serious side effects;
Crestor may cause muscle problems which can lead to autoimmune myopathy and rhabdomyolysis;
Crestor may cause muscle pain or tenderness, and signs of kidney problems, which include a change in the amount of your urine;
Crestor may cause liver problems; or
Crestor may cause yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, dark urine, persistent nausea, or vomiting.
Report to your doctor immediately if you experience any other side effects that you believe are linked with your use of Crestor.
Before you start taking Crestor, disclose to your doctor a complete list of allergies that you may have. Crestor may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.
Disclose to your doctor about your medical history, especially if you ever had liver disease, kidney disease, or alcohol use.
Limit or avoid intake of alcoholic drinks.
The elderly are more sensitive to the side effects of Crestor, especially muscle problems.
Do not take Crestor without your doctor's approval if you are:
Pregnant or trying to be pregnant;
Breastfeeding; or
Taking another medicine or herbal product.
Do not take any red yeast rice products while taking Crestor because some red yeast rice products may also contain a statin which is similar to Crestor. Taking Crestor together with products containing red yeast rice can increase the risk of you getting muscle and liver problems.
