Betnovate Ointment contains betamethasone (0.1%) which is a topical corticosteroid. Apply Betnovate Ointment directly on the affected skin for relief. Skin inflammation occurs by an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity of the skin. Betnovate gets absorbed into the skin and works inside the skin cells to decrease inflammation by reducing the production of the chemicals causing redness, swelling, and itching.
Betnovate works better than cream on dry, scaly skin areas as it is more greasy and thicker.
When you begin your treatment, apply the Betnovate cream and ointment evenly and thinly to the areas affected. You may reduce the frequency of using Betnovate Ointment when you see a noticeable improvement in your condition. Stop using the Betnovate Ointment as your skin repairs or as prescribed by your doctor.
If you are treating an infection, do not apply Betnovate Ointment on the infected areas. Apply Betnovate Ointment on your facial skin only as per your doctor's recommendation, while taking precautions to avoid any contact with your mouth, eyes or nose. Wash your eyes with lots of water if you get the ointment in your eyes. If you swallow the ointment, immediately contact the nearest medical facility or doctor.
Clean your hands well after applying the medication, unless it is your hands you are treating.
Avoid airtight dressings over the area that is being treated. If your doctor instructs you to cover the affected area after applying Betnovate, then cover the affected area of the skin with a clean and fresh dressing/clothing every time. For children, waterproof pants and nappies can be airtight dressing and increase the absorption of the medicine.
Betnovate should be used only once or twice per week when applied to children.
If your skin condition doesn't improve within two weeks, discontinue using the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Avoid using Betnovate Ointment for longer than recommended by your doctor.
If Betnovate Ointment causes infection in the treated area, discontinue the treatment immediately and consult your doctor.
Avoid applying Betnovate Ointment to broken skin or open wounds, or skin areas affected by the following conditions:
Viral infections of the skin, such as herpes simplex, cold sores, and chickenpox
Fungal infections, such as athlete's foot and ringworm
Acne
Bacterial infection
Acne rosacea
Perioral dermatitis or inflammatory rash around the mouth
Widespread plaque psoriasis
Nappy rash
Itchy skin with no inflammation
If you have an allergy to Betnovate or any of its ingredients, avoid using it. Do not replace Betnovate Ointment with your moisturiser.
The following are the common side effects associated with the use of topical corticosteroids like Betnovate:
Spreading or worsening of untreated infections
Irritation or allergic inflammation on the skin
Thinning of the skin
Stretch marks
Reduction in pigmentation of the skin
Groupings of fine blood vessels become prominent under the skin
Acne
Excessive hair growth
Rarely, Betnovate can cause side effects in other parts of your body. For example, a decrease of natural hormones from the adrenal glands. Betnovate may cause vision changes in some people. If you notice any changes in your vision, consult your doctor immediately.
Men and women aged 18 or older can safely use Betnovate Ointment. It can also treat haemorrhoids. However, do not use Betnovate for haemorrhoids if you have or ever had:
Kidney or liver problems
Acne or rosacea
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
An allergic reaction to Betnovate’s active ingredient – Betamethasone
It is uncommon that Betnovate Ointment affects the effectiveness or safety of other medications. However, it is necessary to disclose to your doctor the medicines you may be using/taking before using Betnovate.
Wait for several minutes before applying any other topical medication to the same skin area. It will allow the products to absorb fully and prevent them from getting mixed up on the skin. Do not apply a moisturiser right before or after using Betnovate Ointment, as it can dilute it and make it less effective.
