Lactulose solution is a remedy for constipation that can also be used to treat a liver disease called hepatic encephalopathy. It’s easy to take, simply mix it with water or another cool drink and drink the solution once a day and it will get to work to ease your constipation. This product is perfect for those who find that their stools are dry or hard, making them difficult to pass.

How can Lactulose help to ease my constipation?

Lactulose helps to ease constipation by working as a stool softener. This means that it draws water into your bowel, softening hardened stools and making it easier for them to pass through your system. This is different from some other laxatives, which work by stimulating your bowel, using muscular contractions to move your stools through your system.

Constipation is a common problem that many people suffer with at some point in their life. If you haven’t had a poo at least 3 times in one week or find that your poo is drier, lumpier, larger, or harder to push out than usual, then you probably have constipation. Lactulose is used to treat constipation. Lactulose is not metabolised or absorbed by the body, and the substance helps pull water into the colon, softening the stool. Lactulose also works by promoting peristalsis, pushing food through the digestive system.

This product is recommended for:
  • Pregnant women.
  • Nursing mothers.
  • Children with constipation.
  • People who recently underwent surgery.
  • Older adults or people with severe or chronic constipation

Adults: Initially take 15-30ml daily for the first 2-3 days (45ml may be given in obstinate cases) then 10-15ml daily or according to the need of the patient.

Children: Initially take 10-25ml daily for first 2-3 days then 5-15ml daily or according to the need of the patient.

Dosage does not appear to be related to the age or weight of the child and should be adjusted to produce the required response.

Lactulose isn't absorbed into the bloodstream and is not known to be harmful if used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, as with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking lactulose in pregnancy, or if you're breastfeeding.

Note: 
  • This medication should NOT be taken for more than 5 days without medical supervision.
  • This medication is for short term use only.
  • This medication does NOT help with weight loss.


Before you take Lactulose Oral Solution

Do not take Lactulose oral solution:
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the components of Lactulose oral solution.
if you suffer from galactosaemic (a severe genetic disorder where you cannot digest galactose).
acute inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), blockage in your bowel (apart from normal constipation), digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation, abdominal pain or undetermined cause.

Take special care with Lactulose oral solution
Please tell your doctor before taking Lactulose oral solution:

if you suffer from gastro-cardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome)
if you have symptoms like meterorism or bloating after using it, stop the treatment and consult your doctor.
In these cases your doctor will supervise the treatment carefully.

Long-term use of unadjusted dosages (exceeding 2-3 soft stools per day) or misuse can lead to diarrhoea and disturbance of the electrolytes balance.

If you are an elderly patient or a patient in bad general condition and who take Lactulose oral solution for more than a 6 month period, your doctor will regularly check your blood electrolytes.
Patients with portal-systemic encephalopathy should avoid concomitant administration of other laxatives, because it hinders the individualisation of drug dose.

Please do not use Lactulose oral solution without medical advice for more than two weeks.

Children
Lactulose oral solution should not normally be given to infants and smaller children as it can disturb the normal reflexes for passing stools. In special circumstances your doctor may prescribe Lactulose oral solution for a child, infant or baby. In these cases your doctor will supervise the treatment carefully.
