Duloxetine can improve your mood, energy, and appetite. Duloxetine may reduce nervousness and pain from certain medical conditions.
Duloxetine is a member of the SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibits) class.
Duloxetine acts as a selective serotonin-norepinephrine receptor inhibitor. It increases the levels of serotonin, a substance that naturally occurs in the brain, and norepinephrine. These substances help to maintain mental balance and stop pain signals from moving in the brain.
Duloxetine should be taken exactly as prescribed. You should not take Duloxetine more often or less frequently than your doctor has instructed.
Duloxetine is available as a delayed-release capsule that can be taken by mouth. Duloxetine can be taken with or without food once or twice daily to treat depression. It is typically taken with or without food once daily when it is used to treat generalised anxiety disorder, Fibromyalgia, pain from diabetic neuropathy, ongoing bone or muscular pain.
The delayed-release capsules should be swallowed whole. Do not open delayed-release capsules to mix liquids with them or sprinkle them on food.
Your doctor might start you on a low dose and then increase it after a week.
Although it may help manage your symptoms, this medication will not cure the condition. You may not feel the full effects of this medication for up to four weeks. Even if you feel well, continue taking the medication. You should not stop taking the medication until your doctor approves. Your doctor will gradually decrease the dose. If you suddenly stop taking the medication, withdrawal symptoms may occur.
One capsule daily is sufficient for generalised anxiety, fibromyalgia or the pain of diabetic neuropathy.
