Champix reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms by working in the brain. Champix also reduces the pleasure people get from smoking. It reduces the effects of nicotine in your body. There are nicotine receptors in the brain. Inhaled cigarette smoke triggers a release of dopamine, a chemical that makes you feel good.
Soon after quitting smoking, your levels of dopamine and nicotine begin to decrease. It sets you up for cravings and withdrawals, which can lead to a desire to smoke again. Champix may work by blocking nicotine receptors. Champix's exact mechanism of action is unknown.
Champix should be consumed with a glass of water.
This medication should be combined with counselling and quit-smoking education. There are three ways to set a date to quit smoking or the so-called quit date. Discuss with your doctor the best method for you.
Champix fixed quit - Champix will begin treatment 1 to 2 weeks prior to the date that you plan to stop smoking. The treatment will continue for 12 more weeks.
Flexible quit approach - You start treatment with Champix, and you then set the date for quitting smoking between weeks 2-5 after the first day. The 12-week treatment should be continued. Champix should be continued for 12 weeks to ensure that individuals can quit smoking.
The gradual quit method - This involves taking Champix and slowly decreasing your smoking, to quit by the end of 12 weeks. You can quit smoking anytime before 12 weeks if you are able. Champix can be continued for 12 more weeks, for a total of 24 consecutive weeks.
To decrease your chance of starting smoking again, your doctor may reduce Champix's dosage.
Individuals who fail to quit smoking after the 12-week treatment period should not give up. After identifying the causes of their failure to quit, they should consider retrying the treatment.
Champix should be taken as directed by your doctor. If you forget to take Champix, you can skip the missed dose if your next schedule falls too close to the time you remember you missed it. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
