Atovaquone/Proguanil can be used to treat or prevent malaria by killing parasites. It can be used alone or with other medicines to treat malaria.
Take Atovaquone/Proguanil by mouth with food or with a fat-rich milk beverage. If you vomit after taking Atovaquone/Proguanil, repeat the dosage. Atovaquone/Proguanil can cause vomiting, so consult your doctor right away.
Do not chew the tablet. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, you can crush the tablet and add condensed milk to it. Consume the whole mixture immediately and not keep any of it for later use.
Atovaquone/Proguanil dosage is determined by your medical condition and your response to treatment. Children's dosages of Atovaquone/Proguanil are determined by their body weight.
If you forget to take your medicine, you can still get it if you remember. If you do not remember until the next dose is due, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed dose. Ask your doctor for advice if you are unsure what to do after missing a dose.
The medication should be kept at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children.
For malaria treatment, the usual adult dosage is four tablets per day for three days.
The doses of malaria prevention and treatment for children are determined based on their body weight.
Atovaquone/Proguanil isn't 100% effective in preventing malaria. However, it can be used properly and in conjunction with bite prevention methods.
It is important to receive the right vaccinations.
Malaria can take up to one year to develop once you are bitten. You should see a doctor immediately if you have symptoms such as headaches, night sweats, or abdominal pain during your trip.
