Acetazolamide has the main benefit of preventing and reducing symptoms of altitude illness. Acetazolamide is effective in reducing headaches, dizziness and tiredness that can occur when you climb rapidly to altitudes higher than 10,000 feet.
These are some guidelines:
Take one 250mg tablet twice daily of Acetazolamide to treat mild acute mountain sickness. Then you can resume climbing;
Take one 250mg tablet each day of Acetazolamide to prepare for rapid ascent, even without adequate acclimatization. Start the ascent the day before or as soon after the beginning. Continue taking the tablets for several days after reaching the final altitude;
To treat troubled breathing you can take half a 250mg tablet of Acetazolamide twice daily up to the point that it is comfortable for sleeping.
you are allergic to any of the ingredients of this medicine or to any other medicine;
you are treating children or adolescents under the age of 18;
you have a liver or kidney disorder;
you are intolerant to some sugars, as this product contains lactose monohydrate;
you have an autoimmune disease;
you are a smoker;
you are pregnant, trying to be pregnant or breastfeeding;
you have diabetes, heart failure, kidney disorder or liver disorder; or
you are taking any prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicine.
